A water outage affects toilets as much as drinking. Be Ready covers interruptions; your water company should say what support it is providing.
If the toilet still drains
- Keep non-drinking water (bath water saved before an outage, or water-butt water) for flushing: pour a bucket quickly into the bowl to trigger the flush.
- Do not use drinking water for flushing until drinking needs are covered.
If you cannot flush
- A temporary toilet can be a sturdy bucket with a closable lid, lined with sturdy bags, and absorbent material (sawdust, shredded paper or commercial gel). Double-bag waste and keep it sealed outdoors away from animals until disposal advice is given.
- Reduce use: urinate in a separate bottle if needed to stretch bag capacity (seal carefully).
- Never dispose of bagged waste in rivers or where it can contaminate living areas.
Hands and surfaces
- Wash with soap and water when you have safe water (NHS hand washing).
- Use alcohol hand sanitiser (60%+) when water is scarce — but sanitiser does not remove heavy dirt; wipe first.
- See emergency hygiene kit for wipes, bags and period products.
Boil notices and illness
If a boil water notice is in force, follow the DWI. Stomach illness spreads fast in outages — isolate towels and keep kitchen and toilet cleaning separate.
