Emergencies are easier when people nearby know each other. You do not need a formal group to make a difference.
Before winter or storm season
- Swap first names and a phone number with next-door neighbours.
- Note who might need a knock: older residents, people living alone, families with babies, anyone who relies on power for medical equipment.
- Encourage eligible neighbours to join the free Priority Services Register.
During a cut, flood or cold snap
- Knock and ask if they have light, water, warm clothes and any urgent medicines.
- Share factual updates (power company texts, Met Office warnings) — do not pass rumours.
- Offer a flask of hot water or a spare torch if you can spare them.
- If someone is in danger, call 999. You are not a substitute for the ambulance service.
Flooding and storms
Do not walk or drive through flood water. Help from higher ground: phone Floodline 0345 988 1188 where relevant, and follow flood guidance.
Boundaries
- Do not enter a damaged property if it is unsafe.
- Agree what "help" means — shopping, a phone charge, sitting with someone — and keep your own household supplied too (Be Ready 3-day readiness).
A street that checks on each other recovers faster than one that waits for someone else to go first.
