Getting started with household emergency prep

Help

All guides

You do not need a bunker, a huge budget or special "survival" food. The UK government's Be Ready campaign asks households to be ready for 3 days so you can manage while support reaches those who need it most.

The first five things

  1. Water: at least 3 litres per person per day for drinking, for 3 days. See emergency water.
  2. No-cook food you already eat: tins, crackers, nut butter, UHT milk, dried fruit. See budget food stock.
  3. Light and phone power: torches (safer than candles), spare batteries, a charged power bank. See power cut kit.
  4. A grab bag by the door if you might have to leave quickly. Use our grab bag checklist.
  5. Know the numbers: 999 or 112 in an emergency, 105 for a power cut (England, Scotland and Wales), NHS 111 for urgent medical advice.

Build it gradually

Be Ready suggests adding a little during normal shopping and checking your kit every six months. One extra tin and a bottle of water each shop adds up.

People who need extra help

If anyone relies on power for medical equipment, has a long-term illness, or you have a child under 5, join the free Priority Services Register through your energy network or supplier.
