If you smell gas: open doors and windows, turn off the gas at the meter if you can do so safely, do not use switches, phones or naked flames indoors, leave the building, then call the gas emergency line 0800 111 999 from outside. Follow GOV.UK smell-gas guidance.
Smell gas or suspect a leak
- Get fresh air; extinguish naked flames; do not turn electrical switches on or off.
- Call 0800 111 999 (National Gas Emergency Service) once you are outside.
- Do not go back in until you are told it is safe.
When gas supply is interrupted
Planned works or network faults can cut gas. Boilers and gas hobs stop. Electric alternatives only work if the power is on — a combined power and gas problem needs your no-cook kit (budget food).
Carbon monoxide
Faulty appliances can produce CO even when "gas is working". Fit an audible CO alarm to EN 50291, and know NHS CO symptoms: headache, dizziness, nausea, flu-like feeling. Get out and call 999 if you suspect CO.
Cooking without gas
- Use stored no-cook food first.
- Camping stoves and BBQs: outdoors only.
- See heating without power and recipes with the no-cook filter.
