In a power cut, broadband routers and many cordless phones stop working. Mobile networks can also get congested. Plan for low-tech backups.
Before anything happens
- Keep a charged power bank and a cable that fits your phone (Be Ready).
- Write down key numbers on paper: family, GP, vet, school, insurer, Floodline 0345 988 1188, power cut 105, gas emergency 0800 111 999.
- Note your local FM radio frequencies. A battery or wind-up radio still works when data does not.
- Agree a meet point and an out-of-area contact with your household (see emergency plan).
Getting official information
- Weather: Met Office warnings (also on our UK warnings page).
- Power: call 105 or check Power Cut 105.
- Flooding (England): Floodline 0345 988 1188 and our flood check.
- Emergency services: 999 or 112.
Saving phone battery
- Use airplane mode when you do not need a signal; turn it off briefly to check messages.
- Lower screen brightness; avoid video.
- Text rather than call when networks are busy.
- Keep one phone as the "hot" device and spare power for it.
Neighbours
Check on people nearby who may be alone or rely on power for medical equipment. They may be on the Priority Services Register.
