This is general information, not medical advice. Follow your GP, pharmacist and the label on your medicines.
Request repeats early
Be Ready suggests requesting repeat prescriptions in good time — up to 5 working days ahead. Do not wait until the last tablet in a storm forecast.
NHS guidance on repeat prescriptions covers the NHS App, GP surgery and pharmacy options.
What to keep ready
- A written list of medicines, doses and allergies (also on our medical card).
- Enough of essential regular medicines for a few days beyond your usual routine, if your clinician agrees.
- Any devices you rely on (inhalers, glucose kit) plus spare batteries where relevant.
- A copy of the prescription or a recent repeat slip in your grab bag.
Storage
- Follow the packet: many medicines need a cool, dry place away from sunlight.
- In a power cut, fridge-stored medicines need a plan — ask your pharmacist before an emergency what to do if the fridge warms up.
- Keep medicines in original packaging, out of children's reach.
When to get help
- Life-threatening symptoms: 999 or 112.
- Urgent medical advice when you are unsure: NHS 111 (online or by phone).
- Never share prescription medicines or take someone else's.
