About OrCore Prep
Why I made OrCore Prep
I built OrCore Prep for my own family after the UK government's Be Ready campaign encouraged households to be ready for 3 days (72 hours) in an emergency. I wanted a simple way to keep enough food, water and essentials in the house without spending a fortune or forgetting what was going out of date. It worked for us, so I've shared it for anyone to use for free.
What it does
- Your household: add the adults, children (with ages), dogs and cats in your home, along with any allergies and diets, such as vegan, vegetarian or pescatarian.
- What you need: it works out how much water and food you need for 72 hours, then helps you build longer-lasting stores of cheap staples like rice, lentils, oats, flour and tinned tomatoes.
- A budget that suits you: set what you can afford each week or month, and it suggests what to add to your normal online shop, at the supermarket you choose.
- Hygiene too: toothpaste, toilet roll, wipes, soap, period products and bin bags (and nappies if you have a baby or toddler) are in the 72-hour and longer lists, scaled to your household.
- Equipment list: a separate checklist of things like torches, a radio, a camping stove, gas and a water filter. Pick Budget, Moderate or Ultimate to choose how long the list is and whether it suggests cheap basic, mid-range or premium versions.
- Expiry dates: it tracks what you've got and when it goes out of date, so you can use it up and replace it before it's wasted.
- Works offline: print your stock list or save it to your phone, so you still have it if the internet or power goes down.
- Share with your household: invite your partner or anyone you live with so you all see and update the same list from your own logins.
- Recipes: store-cupboard meals and simple breads and flatbreads you can make on a camping stove, a BBQ or in a Dutch oven.
- Preserve: simple ways to store and preserve food from the garden, allotment or bulk buys, power-free methods first, with short, medium and long-term options.
